Eyedoctors usually provide vision care services such as annual eye exams, diagnose and treat eye diseases, give prescriptions for eye glasses and can fit patients for the proper contact lenses. Prescribes eyeglasses and fits contact lenses. Optometrists cannot perform any form of eye surgeries.
An Optician is a trained professional on fitting prescription eyeglasses. Missouri and Illinois currently do not require opticians to be licensed. However, they may have completed courses or received certifications thru an optician school. They can also apply for nationally recognized credentials.
In order to maintain your eye health, regular eye exams should be performed by an eye doctor for preventing and detecting eye diseases. Some diseases gradually develop without any pain or loss of vision. Even if your eyes don't hurt, significant damage may have already started and may not be irreversible. Dry eyes are defined when your eyes are inadequately moisturized, usually because they do not produce or maintain enough tears. Sometimes it may because of your tear's chemical composition. Often medications, eye injury and the climate you live in can cause dry eyes. Make sure to discuss any concerns, because it may cause eye tissue or cornea damage.
A cataract is a cloudy area that forms in the lens on the front of an eye. Usually cataracts are caused by a chemical change within a portion of an eye. Distorted or blurred vision are usually the symptoms. Those most at risk in developing a cataract are people over the age of 50, cigarette smokers, have had an eye disease or injury prior too, or have cataracts in their family history.
